Can Arnica Help Reduce Pain from Surgery?

Various studies have been done on arnica for several types of pain. Strangely enough, some studies have indicated positive effects from use of the supplement, but others have shown little effect in reducing pain. For example, a 2003 study on marathon runners indicated that a natural remedy with arnica resulted in positive effects on inflamed muscles after running the race.

Arnica may best be used when pain and bruising is present, since the tests done on muscle soreness and damage seem to prove arnica can help decrease pain and inflammation. Scientists believe that the substance in the herb that provides the positive effects is helenalin, which can be a powerful ant-inflammatory compound. Helenalin acts on the NF-kappa B immune chemical.

Especially intriguing for people undergoing back surgery is that the herb has been discovered to decrease pain and swelling in people who are operated on. Studies have been done on people getting plastic surgery which show a large decrease in swelling within eight days of using arnica after surgery compared to a control group.
